Potisinise retsept 18. sajandist / Indigo Urine Vat Recipe from 18th Century

Since this autumn I'm a MA student in Viljandi Culture Academy, studying Native Crafts. I'm spending more and more time going through different databases and archives and I stumbled upon a fascinating book written by Christina (Cajsa) Warg - "Guide to Housekeeping for Young Women" (I read the German translation from 1789). It is a famous Swedish cookbook that had 14 editions. From the third edition (1762) it included an appendix with dye recipes. I really loved the recipe for dyeing with indigo urine vat, it's so detailed! I translated it (scroll down for the english translation) so you can enjoy it as well :)

"To dye woolen yarn blue." (from Christina Warg "Swedisches Koch- und Haushaltungsbuch: Nebst einem Unterricht auf Seide, Wolle und Leinen zu Färben: zum Nutzen junge Frauenzimmer", 1789)

"Collect the urin, the best is from those who drink strong drinks. Pour it into a vat or pot and cover it with a lid. Between the lid and the vat put a piece of cloth so that the vat is really tightly covered and keep it in a warm, but not hot oven for 3 or 4 days. Then separate the clear urine from the sediment by pouring it off, and throw the sediment away. Rinse the vat properly, so that you can pour the clear urine back into it. Then rub indigo into a fine powder and put it in a small bag made of thin linen, sew it tightly closed and put it in the clear urin. Let it stay there for 4-5 days and rub the bag once every day.

To test the dye, put a string of yarn into it. If it is green after soaking for 12 hours, the dye is good. Put yarns into the vat, one after another and squeeze them in it, shake them loose and put them back evenly distributed. After the yarns have stayed there from morning to midday, squeeze them again, shake them and put them back into the vat.

The yarns will stay in the vat like this for 2-3 days, until they are suitably dark. You have to squeese the skeins and shake them and put them back into the vat every morning and evening. Every time you also have to rub the bag with indigo. If the yarns are as dark as necessary, you have to squeeze the dye liquid from the yarns and rinse them in urine first. Then pour this urine into the vat to dye light blue colours. Wash the yarns in a hot soapy water, rinse them in hot water and hang them to dry.

Proportions for dyeing: for 1 pound (Saxon pound = 467 g) of woolen yarn take 1 lot of Indigo (Saxon lot = 14,6 g) if you wish to get a dark blue. Take enough urine to cover the yarns well otherwise the yarns will be blotchy. It is important to have a good and tight vat and keep it „summer warm” (in German "Sommerwarm") at all times, but not warmer."
