Millega värvida keset talve, kui varusid pole kogutud? Mõni mõttetu rabarberipõõsas ikka maja ümber on! Ja kui maa pole külmunud, tasub rabarberijuur välja kaevata, puhtaks pesta, tükkideks lõigata ja patta panna! Ning pärast lõng takkaotsa - saab ilusa kollase lõnga. Peitsi pole vajagi, jääb ka ilma hea. Siit saad lugeda, kuidas Leena Riihelä rabarberijuurtega värvis ja siin üks inglisekeelne juhend.
Rabarberijuur on seest väga ilus kollane ja lõhnab meeldivalt - kergelt aniisi järele. Mul oli väga vähe lõnga (ca 40 g), aga kange tahtmine proovida. Juurt oli mul väääga palju, seega otsustasin priisata ja võtsin seda 4 x rohkem kui lõnga ehk siis 160 g. Lõikusin ära ja panin 2 l veega keema. Kuna vahepeal pidin ka lapsi kantseldama, läks vesi paar korda liiga kõva mulinaga keema - Efeliine kirjutab, et seda peaks vältima. Keetsin kolmveerand tundi, lasin jahtuda. Otsustasin juuretükke seest mitte välja võtta. Kastsin lõnga märjaks ja panin potti, kuumutasin vee 90 kraadini ning lasin pool tundi haududa. Keerasin tule alt ära ja lasin lõngal veel pool tundi värvilahuses seista. Siis loputasin. Ja loputasin. Ja loputasin :) Isegi viimane (neljas-viies) loputusvesi oli õrnalt kollane, millest järeldasin, et juuri sai ikka liiga palju.
Kui lõng oli kuivanud, selgus, et juuretükkide pottijätmise tõttu olid lõngal mõnes kohas oranzikad laigud. Iseenesest see mind ei häirinud. Ma arvan, et väike ebaühtlus on käsitsi värvitud lõnga juures ainult kasuks, lõng jääb nii elavam, selline käetunnetus küljes. Aga kuna põhivärvus oli külmem (kuld)kollane ja laigud olid soojad pruunikasoranzid, siis lihtsalt värvid ei klappinud.
Kuid mida teha ebaõnnestunult värvitud lõngaga? Üle värvida! Näiteks indigoga. Aga see on juba pikem jutt...

I decided to dye with rhubarb roots, because I have many rhubarbs around my house (too many!), so this dyestuff was very easy to get. Leena Riihelä has written in her blog about dyeing with rhubarb roots and here you'll find a tutorial in English. You can get nice yellows from rhubarb roots even without a mordant.
Rhubarb root is very beautiful from the inside. It is dark yellow, even orange and it smells fresh, slightly of anise. I had only 40 grams of yarn, but lots and lots of rhubarb root. So I decided to get 4 times more roots than I had yarn (160 g). I cut the root into pieces and put it to boil in 2 litres of water. As I had to watch the children the same time, it boiled a little too hard a couple of times and that's not supposed to happen as it is not good for the dyeing process, states one Estonian dyeing book. I boiled the roots 3/4 hours, then let the pot cool. Put in the yarn and let it simmer at 90 C for another 1/2 hours, then turned off the heat and let the yarn stay in the solution for 1/2 hours. After that I rinced the yarn several times, but the rince water was still slightly yellow even after 4-5 times. So I decided that I had taken a little too much of the roots :)
After the yarn was dry, it turned out that the rhubarb root pieces I had left in the dye solution, had dyed some places orangey. I didn't mind the yarn being unevenly dyed - I don't think that hand-dyed yarn has to be very even, a little unevenness adds a nice feeling. But as the main color was colder yellow and the spots were warm brown-orangey, the colors just didn't match. But you can always overdye yarn you don't like! With indigo, for example. But that's another (longer) story...
